An update on Kagi Translate

Hi everyone,

Some of you might have noticed that Translate no longer works when you're signed out, or that it shows as offline. This is because we have temporarily turned off free access while we work through the cost of running Translate.

If you have an active subscription, Translate still works. Sign in on translate.kagi.com or in the mobile apps.

If you don't, you can subscribe to a paid Kagi plan now, or wait until we are able to reopen access more broadly.

Why is Translate disabled for non-members?

When we launched, we allowed anyone to use Translate without an account. We wanted it to be easy to try, and match Kagi's philosophy of building products that are fast, private, and free of ads and tracking.

It turned out to be more popular than we ever expected, and that's awesome! But offering it free to everyone now costs more than a small company can sustainably absorb.

Rather than degrade the experience for everyone, we paused open access for signed-out users and kept it running for members while we work on a more sustainable setup.

How long will it be unavailable?

We don’t have an exact date yet.

We are looking at ways to bring broader access back without making Translate unsustainable. That might mean different limits for free use, account-based access, changes to what is included in each plan, or a different pricing model. We are still monitoring costs, so we may also need to adjust limits or pricing for paid users in the future.

When we have something concrete to share, we’ll let you know.

If Translate is the reason you subscribe to Kagi, enter “I love translate!” in the “How did you hear about Kagi?” box. We read those and it helps us understand how many people are subscribing specifically for Translate and how much demand there is for it.

Get notified about updates

If you’d like a heads up the moment that free access opens back up, you can sign up to be notified.

Translate remains private and ad-free. We do not use your translations for advertising, and we do not build profiles from what you translate. This will never change.

Thanks for using Kagi Translate and for sticking with us while we sort this out!
