Kagi Translate is back

Screenshot

Today, Kagi Translate is moving to a freemium model and launching a new standalone Individual subscription for $8/month.

Anyone with a Kagi account can continue using Translate for free with a limited monthly allowance. For people who use it more regularly, the new Individual plan includes all Kagi Translate features. Translate will also continue to be included with the Kagi Ultimate plan.

Kagi Translate has become one of our most popular products, growing faster than we could have imagined. That growth has also made it considerably more expensive to operate.

We're sorry we had to end unrestricted free access so abruptly. This new model gives us a sustainable way to keep Translate accessible without compromising translation quality.

Changes to existing plans

Subscribers on Starter, Professional, Family, and Team plans will keep their existing Translate access through October 12, 2026 (UTC).

After that, they will move to the free version of Kagi Translate. Those who use Translate more regularly can subscribe to Translate Individual or move to Kagi Ultimate.

Ultimate subscribers are not affected by this transition and will continue to have Kagi Translate included. As we roll out our unified Fair Use system, usage across Kagi Translate and Kagi Assistant will count toward a shared allowance.

Free Translate

Kagi Translate remains free to use with a Kagi account.

Free users receive a limited monthly allowance designed for occasional use, resetting on the first day of every month (UTC).

How quickly you use it depends largely on the translation mode and features you choose. Best Quality uses considerably more resources than Standard or Basic and can exhaust the free allowance quickly.

Once you reach your allowance, you can wait for it to reset or upgrade Translate Individual or Kagi Ultimate plan.

Website translation in Fast mode remains free for everyone, including signed-out users, so translated links can still be shared with anyone.

Kagi Translate Individual

The new Individual plan is $8/month and includes all Kagi Translate features – websites, documents, text, dictionary, proofreading, and more.

As we roll out our Fair Use system, the plan will include up to $8 in AI usage per billing period, under the same Fair Use Policy as Kagi Assistant.

As a rough guide, that covers approximately 1.3 million source-text characters on Standard, around 900 pages, or about 2.5 million on Basic and 125,000 on Best Quality. Actual usage varies depending on the content, languages, settings, and features used. A long document/single translation also goes considerably further than the same text sent across multiple short snippets.

Once the Fair Use system is fully rolled out, reaching the allowance will pause new translations until the next billing cycle or an early plan renewal.

Mobile apps

The new freemium experience and Individual subscription are launching on the web first.

An app update supporting the new usage and subscription model will follow shortly after we work through Apple App Store and Google Play requirements.
